A good-sized chunk of the audience watches the Super Bowl as much for the commercials as for the football action. So maybe it is worth the $2.5 million advertisers had to pay for each 30-second spot. But just how long do those much-anticipated, million-dollar, extravagant, over-produced, sometimes tasteless and sometimes very funny commercials stay in the minds of Super Bowl viewers? In between the innumerable ABC promos, do they remember what products were being hawked in which commercials? Do you? If you knew the answers, the television spots have done their job – to create top-of-mind awareness, although your ability to recall some of the brands may be based on seeing the spot since the Super Bowl. Certainly the advertisers hope to make an impact on the most important number – their bottom line – with these spots and more during the next major televised sports events, the Winter Olympics and the NCAA basketball tournament in March. According to USA Today, the viewers’ favorite commercial was “The Magic Fridge” by Bud Light, with Budweiser’s “Young Clydesdale Dreams Big” coming in second.
