Facts and Figures:
Was it worth it?

If you were watching the Super Bowl XL telecast very closely, you may have seen, during the last half, the touchy-feely NFL spot about how watching the Super Bowl connects all of America together into one big happy family. Well, maybe not so much, but there’s no escaping the pervasive interest in this annual sporting mega-event.

The 10 most-watched programs in TV history are all Super Bowls. This year, families in 45.85 million homes (or 90.7 million viewers) watched the Pittsburgh Steelers defeat the Seattle Seahawks, 21-10, making Super Bowl XL the second most-watched program in history. (Remember what the first was?)

A good-sized chunk of the audience watches the Super Bowl as much for the commercials as for the football action. So maybe it is worth the $2.5 million advertisers had to pay for each 30-second spot. But just how long do those much-anticipated, million-dollar, extravagant, over-produced, sometimes tasteless and sometimes very funny commercials stay in the minds of Super Bowl viewers? In between the innumerable ABC promos, do they remember what products were being hawked in which commercials? Do you?

To find out, join us for another installment of our Super Bowl Commercial Recollection Test. No fair looking up the spots on-line! (If you get stuck, answers are below.)

If you knew the answers, the television spots have done their job – to create top-of-mind awareness, although your ability to recall some of the brands may be based on seeing the spot since the Super Bowl. Certainly the advertisers hope to make an impact on the most important number – their bottom line – with these spots and more during the next major televised sports events, the Winter Olympics and the NCAA basketball tournament in March.

According to USA Today, the viewers’ favorite commercial was “The Magic Fridge” by Bud Light, with Budweiser’s “Young Clydesdale Dreams Big” coming in second. In fact, Budweiser scored six of the top 10 fan favorites.

Quiz answers: 1) Nationwide Insurance; 2) Sierra Mist; 3) FedEx; 4) Ford’s Escape Hybrid, because it’s environmentally friendly, of course; 5) Michalob Ultra Amber; 6) a Hummer; 7) Ameriquest; 8) Aleve; 9) Motorola’s new Pebl phone; 10) Fidelity; 11) Degree deodorant; 12) We have no idea, but it was Emerald Nuts.
