Our interactive media department developed a system that requires the customer to view the safety and maintenance portions of a specially encoded DVD to receive his or her warranty.”

White explained that the VeriSyst system automatically identifies whether or not the customer’s computer or electronic DVD player is connected to the Internet and if a connection is detected, the computer seamlessly logs the viewer onto a secure web-based portal to register for the warranty, but only after he or she has viewed the necessary video content.

White said use of the DVD format for communicating information, making a sales pitch or providing instructions is becoming a preferred method for many reasons. First of all, it’s effective in creating a consistent message and in brand building. It’s ideal when a company needs to introduce a complex product or service that could be more easily explained with a video demonstration. And DVDs are known to generate much higher response rates than traditional direct mail, while at the same time, they can be less costly to produce and mail than printed materials.

One big advantage for manufacturers is that VeriSyst has the potential to reduce a company’s chance of being found liable in a product safety lawsuit. Attorneys for Bingham McHale who did the liability and patent searches for the product found that VeriSyst represents a patentable new way of doing business and determined that VeriSyst’s video element and verification of viewership could reduce legal liability, because the system could serve as proof that the DVD’s content had been viewed and could verify the name and information of the registered viewer.

“As we developed this system, we started to realize that useful applications for VeriSyst go beyond the legal liability function,” White said. “Right now we’re using VeriSyst to assist clients in selling memberships online, driving viewers to a company web site after an intro video, and recruiting physicians and nurses. The system may even be a useful tool in verifying the collection of petitions or as a less costly way to create and distribute a catalog.”
